KINGMOOR

UPPERBY

To the best of my information the Canal shed was opened by the North British Railway in 1862 and was numbered 68E.12C came when the railways were nationalized in 1948. The shed served the lines of the Waverley Route to Edinburgh, Riddings Jct to Langhom,  Silloth, Alston, and  Newcastle. Canal was the smallest of the three Carlisle engine sheds, Yet it had a full size coaling tower. An external &  internal turntable would turn a pacific loco. Some how the shed became my favorite, you seemed to be welcome has long as you asked to go round, depending which foreman was on duty.

The shed closed on Saturday the 10th June 1963 after achieving over 100 years of operation. The locomotives were moved to 12A Kingmoor by the staff  who did not take the voluntary redundancy. The shed officially closed on the 19th June 1963.

The transferred staff had to learn the new roads out of Carlisle, so the former L.N.E.R engines were seen on the Settle & Carlisle and the G.&.S.W.R via Dumfries. The men had to learn to drive the L.M.S locomotives as well.

So lets have a look back at the Ex N.B / L.N.E.R locomotives which were housed along with some L.M.S and standard locos at Carlisle CANAL.
