The end of an era Canal Shed demolished October 1963. The coaling tower stood a little longer, it is a pity it was not preserved in memory of all who worked there during its 100 years of operation.

There is not much to show that there was an engine shed here excepted for a few decomposed railway sleepers.

A large slab of concrete is all that remains of the base of the Coaling Tower. Nature has reclaimed the land and the only traffic is people walking their dogs, cycle enthusiasts, and cross country motor cyclists

UPDATE  It is 40 years this month June 2003 since the Canal closed. The Silloth line closed on the 7th September 1964. Watch out for the Carlisle Library exhibition and audio visual shows in August/ September 2004.

The railway sleepers of the Canal were used  like grave stones at the entrance to Engine Lonning now a cycle path. It was a good walk from the Newtown Road entrance to the shed.

I am not sure if this wooded wheel is a shed article, it may have been dumped has it was not buried in the soil.

The Canal area . Left was to the shed entrance, right was  the Waverley Route which closed on the 6th January 1969.
