SPOTTING 1958/59

Brian's RAILWAY YEARS

By the summer of 1958 the main roof work was still not complete. The canopies were waiting for the glass to be fitted.

Platform 1 the new canopies replace the overhaul roof.

In between the roof & canopy upgrade we learned a little more about the locos coming into the station. Some were allocated to sheds around the country. Carlisle had 3 engine sheds, Kingmoor Upperby & Canal, the locomotives allocated there we saw regular. So we bought a shed directory book & a loco spotting book below.

Bank Holidays were the best time for trainspotting, there were lots of extra trains passing through. We would be able to see some of the engines which were not allocated at Carlisle. very often on specials.

1957 saw the introduction of a non stop express from London to Glasgow. The Caledonian was an all maroon train headed by the Duchess or Coronation class. Picture opposite.

Class 3f 44346 reverses  into  the bay on platform 2, which was for trains to west Cumbria line. By this time the station roof had been rebuilt from the original overhaul one. Note the new screen and canopies. To the left platform 1 and the sidings are uncovered.

Carlisle once had seven Co/s running trains into the station. Here a former L.N.E.R B1 61239 meets L.M.S Black 5 44681

A Patriot class 45544 stands in the middle road waiting to take over a train from the north. Note the coach in Plt 5 Newcastle bay is in Western region livery brown & cream.

November 1959 Duchess of Hamilton is seen leaving Carlisle with the Glasgow to London 10.19a.m arrival where the train only stopped for a crew change, it departed at 10.21 a.m.                      The London to Glasgow Caledonian arrived in Carlisle late evening at 9.19 p.m. and departed at 9.21 p.m.
