1960 was expected to be a normal year at the station, but that was not to last. British Railways had introduced a modernization programme in 1955, which would see the demise of 9.000 steam locomotives by the end of 1968.Rail tours were organized by societies and old engines were polished with oil to make them shine.

1964 Former Canal A3 pacific 60088 Dick Turpin at Carlisle Kingmoor being cleaned by a keen photographer. The loco was captured climbing Beatock on the 13.26 to Perth.

Although diesel traction had been introduced in 1948, they did not start dominated the main line rails until 1961. Steam Locomotives worked along side they new partners. They were used on standby for diesel teething troubles. This was known as the transition period.

We seemed to make more conversations with the loco crews, we would ask them what they thought of the diesels.
