1969 saw the ban on steam, loco owners were disappointed having invested in the giants of steam.

1972 saw the return to steam on the Newcastle & Carlisle line. In 1978 the Settle line saw V2 Green Arrow climb the Long Drag in the April sleet

1979 steam was banned owing to the collapsed of the Penmanshiel Tunnel. The east Coast trains from Edinburgh were diverted via Carlisle to Newcastle & Leeds via the Settle.

1980 saw the a new beginning with the Duchess of Hamilton climbing the Long Drag on the Settle, except it came to a halt at Stainforh a few miles north of Settle, and a diesel assisted the train as far as Bleamoor. The Duchess returned later and found the long drag no problem. Other locomotives also followed during the 90s.

The mid 90s was a big surprise when B.R allowed steam over the holy grail Shap to Carlisle, and since privatization steam is still running in 2000, who said The Age Of Steam as Finally Gone.
