By the mid sixties some of the diamond crossings were lifted. When the station was electrified, all of the diamond crossings were removed & replaced by a simple track plan as seen left 0pposite. Look at the bays to the right which are now a car park, most of the trains which worked out of there were 3rd rail electric.

The station pilot J72 68736 .Introduced in 1998 by Worsdell The B.R tradition was to paint her in L.N.E.R apple green. She also carried emblem of the North Eastern & British Railways. Shed 52a Gateshead.

J72 69005 was in fine external appearance in B.R black livery with the 1960s emblem. Shed 52a Gateshead.
